Growing up, I knew for certain I was not creative. That’s because I knew my older sister, Katie was. Katie’s most casual doodles looked like magic to me. The best I could do was copy her. Color, design, imagination—those were not my gifts. I knew I would never come up with really creative ideas—ideas that were mine alone.
Thirty years later, I know all those certainties were actually lies. Turns out I had no idea how creative I was—or that, given half a chance, creativity would help me survive my most terrifying struggles and fill my life with joy.
If you:
- Suspect you aren’t really creative,
- Yearn to be more creative,
- Wish you had more energy for creativity,
- Long to improve your creative skills,
- Wonder why it’s so hard to motivate yourself to do creative work,
I want to invite you to consider a revolutionary idea.
What if you are just as creative as you need to be right now? And what if embracing that could help you in very practical ways?
What if, instead of comparing yourself unfavorably to Katie, or Lizzo, or Leonardo Da Vinci, you asked:
What kind of creative person am I?
To help you, I’ve created a simple creative personality test.
While completing the test, go with your gut and answer what you feel most often.
Trouble identifying with these questions? Think of an area you feel some confidence in that our society doesn’t consider “creative”, like social skills, home economics, finance, or community organizing. Let’s not limit “creativity” to paint and poetry. (Wonder if redefining creativity is cheating? I’m releasing a book in early 2023 that will address just that question.)
